Q: I just moved and am looking to find some cheap Massachusetts Auto Insurance. Can anyone recommend a place?
I just moved to Massachusetts from Rhode Island and recently purchased a new car. I need cheap insurance for my car because I am young and don't make a lot of money. Has anyone reading had a good experience with a Massachusetts Auto Insurance Agency? I really would prefer to do this all online instead of on the phone. Websites are welcome! Thanks! Sorry- should have been more specific- I'm in Melrose, Mass- right next to Malden. Thx!

A: Insurance is very individual because it's based on your drivers record, sex, age, and a number of other variables such as location, credit rating and type of vehicle being insured.

Q: Why is there no competition amongst Massachusetts auto insurance?
I have to write a term paper about a state, local, or federal issue and I've decided to write about why massachusetts is the only state in the coutry that will now allow any competition amongst auto insurance providers. It's an issue amongst drivers state-wide and Im wondering if anyone knows anything about this obscene policy that might help me put this puzzle together. If anyone has any websites or just general knowledge that may help me, I would appreciate it.

A: Will the last insurance company in Mass please turn out the lights when they leave? I work at a small auto insurance company and when I want to cut the tension in a meeting, I suggest we sell in Massachusetts; breaks 'em up every time. Even GEICO sells in 49 states, everywhere but Mass. The Mass insurance commissioner & legislature only allow 1 policy the be sold and sets rates that insurers can charge. Mass drivers have no real incentive to keep a clean driving record and companies have no incentive to find good drivers. The 15 or so auto insurers in the state like the way things work so pay big $$ to the legislature to keep things the way they are. Once in a while someone brings up the 'reform' word and kick it around but nothing ever really changes. In ten words or less, overregulation of the industry. No competition, no cost controls. Mass has 15 companies competing, Ohio has over 600. Try insurancejournal.com and search for Mass & auto; there are lots of articles.

Q: Why are there so few auto insurance companies in Massachusetts?
Allstate, Statefarm, and Geico all don't offer auto insurance in Massachusetts. Does anyone know why this is?

A: I remember many years ago (late '70s) when I was applying to M.I.T., the material they sent me said that MA had the highest rate of car theft in the nation. I don't know if that's still the case after more than 25 years, but if so, that could cause there to be few insurance companies there. I know it's maybe the only state left in which Geico won't insure.

Q: Massachusetts AUTO Insurance?
Where can I get auto-insurance in Mass. (online) which will allow me to pay with a credit card online, and get a policy number right now?

A: Mass has some strange insurance laws. Most national companies do not write policies in Mass, so you most likely are not going to be able to buy on line!! Mass insurance is usually not in effect until the car is registered.

Q: Massachusetts auto insurance question?
If I let a friend or relative borrow my car and it gets into an accident, whose responsible from there? Me who owns the vehicle or the person borrowing my car?

A: If that other person has insurance on their own car then their policy is responsible. If they are uninsured then your policy is going to take the hit for the repair bills. If they are under-insured (for example carrying 10/20 insurance and causing an accident with $30000 in liability), then your policy will have to cover the rest of the costs. Even worse - if the accident causes disability and there is a lawsuit for a million dollars then all the rest of that million will come out of both your hides. If they were drunk while driving and you should have realized it when you loaned them the car you are in for criminal liability too.

Q: In massachusetts which auto insurance will insure a vehicle even if it owes another preminum?

A: Not sure I get your question. If you owe money to a company, then none of them are going to give you insurance until you settle your debt. But if you owe money to company A, company B wont know that.

Q: Do you support changing Auto Insurance practices in Massachusetts? Do you like the idea of getting rid of the?
no fault policies and allowing open competition among insurance providers? I hope it changes. I am sick of paying higher rates for bad drivers who speed and cause accidents. I have no accidents and no speeding tix in 20 yrs of driving and I still have to pay high policies because the rates are predetermined depending on where you live and what step you are (9 being the best which is where I am but I still pay over $1000 a yr because I live near Boston). How do you feel about it?

A: No fault takes the responsibility for your own actions away. If I do not have to pay for the damage that my negligence causes to others, I have very little incentive to avoid that damage. You can see that in the way people drive in Mass. It is one of the more aggressive driving areas of the country. People have less fear of accidents, especially those driving older cars. There is no real competition for insurance in Mass. If you purchase a vehicle out of state, in a state that allows dealers to issue temporary registration plates, you can not get the current Mass insurance companies to cover you until you have registered the car in Mass. In most states, you just call your agent and have the vehicle added to the policy. No fault = No personal responsibility

Q: Massachusetts Auto Insurance costs?
Can Anyone tell me how much I should expect to pay for insurance in MA? I am a newly licensed driver, 20 years old, female, not married and will be driving a 2002 Nissan Sentra. I dont have any accidents or anything and would be the only one driving in my family. Im a college student

A: I suggest that you find a reputable local agent for assistance. Effective April 1, auto insurance rates will no longer be regulated. The auto insurance industry is switching to a competitive system. I am not sure if you have noticed, but insurance companies are advertising BIG TIME! They are all competing for your business. Shopping on your own may be cumbersome. I can recommend Liberty Mutual. Their rates are competitive, and the claims customer service is excellent.

Q: Are there other companies besides Premier that individulas from Massachusetts can buy auto insurance from?
If so, what are some of them? Somebody told me Premeir has a monopoly in Massachusetts, so I want to know if this is true.

A: No, they are not the only company. There are many companies that write in the State of Mass. However, the rate is determined by the State and no matter what company you go to the rate will be the same. The only thing that some companies offer are some extra discounts (if you work at a certain company, if you are a member of a club like BJs, if you are a teacher, etc). They are odd discounts but the only ones that the state really allows so that some companies can get a bit of a rate advantage to get more customers. Pick up the phone book and start calling. Call a good independent agent & they will be able to help you. They will know the discounts that you can get. Good luck.

Q: Typically Cheapest Auto Insurance Company in Massachusetts?
Suggestions anyone? Anyone shopped around and found a company that is better overall?

A: There is no ONE insurance company that is right for everyone - everyone is rated individually - and all companies have different "likes and dis-likes", different credit tiers, different business models, and many other factors that can vary your rate - and a QUOTE is ONLY a quote until the policy is issued. Typically, insurance rates will vary from State to State and can even vary by ZIPCODE! It also will depend on the type of car/truck, coverages, limits of liability, and driving record. Some companies run credit scores and MOST run a motor vehicle report and CLUE (Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange) report to see about undisclosed accident involvement. The best thing to do is call a LOCAL independent agent or broker. Don't go across town, or to some other city - look for someone CLOSE. Just look in the phone book for the PIA or Big I (Trusted Choice) logos and you will find a professional licensed agent that will be able to help you solve your insurance problems, and give you rate comparisons of several different companies. An independent insurance agent will normally have a dozen different companies and if he cannot help you, he should be networked with other local agents that can. In my agency, we have companies that do NOT run a credit score and welcome drivers with "less than perfect" driving records and specialize in youthful operators! Most of the replies on this site say "go to this on-line carrier or that on-line carrier or that 1-800 number" but I'm sure that when you do, you will find some impersonal computer user with a script to work from and you won't be able to talk with the same person every time you have a problem! Good luck, drive RESPONSIBLY and I hope this helps!

Q: is there a list of auto insurance reform groups for massachusetts?

A: im from caly

Q: Is there a statute of limitations for filing an auto accident insurance claim in Massachusetts?
and if so, how long is it?

A: in MASS you have 3 years to settle or sue for claims for vehicle damages and the same 3 yrs for injury claims.

Q: I live in Massachusetts where auto insurance can't compete my question is....?
What is the benefits of competing rates? Well duh, you say because you may get cheaper rates somewhere else but I need proof. Right now I have a '95 Ford Escort, I have basic insurance, I'm a step 12, and I pay about $140 a month...what is better than that? Please name the state you live in.

A: crud I'm sorry... I know I said on the other question I asked I would come and answer this one, but I really don't know much about auto insurance... and especially not in Mass. Good luck though! Sorry I couldn't help more.
