Q: Can anyone give examples of how much their auto insurance went up in New Jersey (or another state) after a DWI
I recently received a DWI conviction in S. Jersey (my first offense) and was wondering how much local insurance companies will raise my rate? If anyone has experienced this I'd really appreciate knowing how much their rates rose. Also, is there any certain companies that give better rates to those who have DWI convictions? I appreciate any help. Thanks!

A: In NJ a DWI is 9 insurance points & when I was there, points were about $100 per point per year. I'm sure it is more now. When your insurance company finds out (if it is a company other than progressive or assigned risk), & they will find out, they will nonrenew you (since insurance companies can do this once your insurance points are 9 or more). The best person to ask is your insurance agent. Ask them the surcharge per insurance point. You will either have to go to the assigned risk pool or Progressive. I would suggest you go to Progressive because in the assigned risk pool, you get assigned to a company at random (well not really random, there is a formula the state uses but you never know who you will get) & it may be a lousy company with lousy customer service. Good luck to you.

Q: Which is the cheapest auto insurance company in new jersey?

A: New Jersey Manufacturers insurance company in Trenton is the best. Every so often I comparison shop, and NJM is always the best value. Also they pay out a dividend every year.

Q: need auto insurance who is the cheapest in new jersey?

A: There is not one company that is cheapest for everyone. It will vary be driving history, credit score, age and other factors. I would contact several local agents to compare quotes. Here is a directory - http://www.findlocalinsurance.com

Q: State of New Jersey Motor Vehicle Violations Surcharge?
My wife got a surcharge for $250.00 for next 3 years for not having an insurance card when cop pulled her over. She has the auto insurance but did not have the insurace card with her. Is she still responsible for the surcharge? It seems to be unfair

A: Contact your local municipal court or better yet, look in your local phone book for an agent with the PIA logo or perhaps NJAAA (New Jersey Auto Agents Alliance) - you should be able to find a professional insurance agent that will help you find out! In Texas, we have the same type surcharge but ONLY if you actually paid a ticket for No Insurance. If she didn't pay it you should just be able to show proof of insurance. Good luck and I hope this helps!

Q: How much do you pay for Insurance in your state?
I live in New Jersey and the Insurance for an auto is so high here. I pay $168 a month for a 2003 ford explorer that is loaded. I have no tickets, my record is clean. I also have lived in Utah and my Insurance was only $50 a month. Just wondering what everyone pays in different states?

A: Typically, insurance rates will vary from State to State and can even vary by ZIPCODE! It also will depend on the type of car/truck, coverages, limits of liability, and driving record. SOme companies run credit scorees and MOST run a motor vehicel report and CLUE (Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange) report to see about undisclosed accident involvement. The best thing to do is call a LOCAL independent agent. Don't go across town, or to some other city - look for someone CLOSE. Just look in the phone book for the PIA or Big I (Trusted Choice) logos and you will find a professional licensed agent that will be able to help you solve your insurance problems, and give you rate comparisons of several different companies. You have another source in NJ, the NJ Auto Agents Alliance. These guys SPECIALIZE in auto insurance and it wasn't THAT long ago, auto insurance was almost non-existant at an affordable price for ANYONE - but due to the efforts of the NJAAA, things have changed! An independent insurance agent will normally have a dozen different companies and if he cannot help you, he should be networked with other local agents that can. Most of the replies on this site say "go to this on-line carrier or that on-line carrier or that 1-800 number" but I'm sure that when you do, you will find some impersonal computer user with a script to work from and you won't be able to talk with the same person every time you have a problem! Utah was one of the first States that had an electronic verification data base that would identify uninsured motorists that WORKED and is STILL working! By controlling the uninsured motorists in the State of Utah, they effectively lowered the liability insurance rate for EVERYONE. New Jersey used to be the WORST State to try to buy insurance in and a lot of folks would go to PA to get it......I think it has changed some but the rates are STILL higher than most other States in the USA! Good luck, drive RESPONSIBLY and I hope this helps

Q: Florida Auto Insurance?
What is the price range for Florida Liability and Full Coverage Insurance? In New Jersey Liability is around $80.00 a month.

A: It depends on other policy details, such as address and driving record. Find an Independent Agent representing lots of companies and price it out.

Q: Need a New Jersey Defensive Driving Course?
New Jersey Approved Defensive Driving Class for NJ DMV 2 Point reductions and 5% auto insurance discounts.

A: Call you local Division of Motor Vehicles office, they'll give you the info you need.

Q: Auto Insurance on a Salvage Title?
Is it possible in the Sate of New Jersey to obtain Limo/Taxi insurance coverage for a vehicle that carries a salvage title?

A: You need to contact you Title office/DMV. Each state has different laws. Most states have laws that once that title is changed to a salvage title it is illegal to drive on the road until it is repaired and inspected by the state highway partrol. They will then give you documents to take back to the title office/DMV, if it passes inspection, to get a rebuilt salv title. At that time you can legally drive it and insure it. The value may be decreased though so keep that in mind if you want to carry full coverage.

Q: New Jersey No Threshold Option?
[Please do not explain this option to me, as I understand it. Thank you.] I presently carry the option to sue for pain and suffering on my NJ auto insurance. When this first came in about 30 years ago, it only made about $100 difference in my individual premium. Now, with 3 cars and 3 drivers, it is more than 25% of my total premium. It's reached the point where I am considering whether to drop the option and give up the right to sue, unless the injury meets the specified qualifications. (If you are not familiar with this list, you can't really answer my question.) Do you have any experience in this area or any suggestions? Do you think it's worth the expense of holding onto that "no threshold" option in the event of some crazy neck or back injury that can't really be diagnosed or treated? Do you have any random thoughts about the "no threshold" option in New Jersey? If you have a least or most favorite company, I'd be happy to hear about them, too. Thanks for your input. Cost is NOT my only concern. I am just contemplating what to do to get my family (3 cars - 3 drivers) down below $8,000. I would not dream of going with some companies named and others not named, because their reputation for poor handling of claims and clients is horrible. I will stick with my "top tier" company, but I'm looking at cutting about $2,200 out of my premium if I drop the right to sue for non-scheduled injuries. I have the maximum of any coverage offered, including PIP and disability, as you mentioned. This will factor into my decision.

A: I'm afraid there's no one good answer for this question. All insurance is a gamble - you're betting you won't need it, but you have to balance what you're willing to pay in premium now vs how you'll feel if (G*d forbid) something happens later on to someone in your familiy that doesn't breach and you have no legal recourse. A personal injury lawyer would be horrified you're even asking, full tort/whiplash BI claims are their bread and butter... and, in my opinion, are also the reason your rates jumped so much in the first place. After about 17 years in the insurance industry, I personally dropped my tort option to "limited" (our version of verbal threshold). However, I greatly raised my med pay/PIP portion and wage loss to balance that out. Raising these to decent levels (+100k) was still considerably less premium than full tort. I personally figured that if it was just a soft tissue injury, as long as my meds and my work loss was covered, I'd be fine. If the injury was severe, I'd breach. The only case where I'd want to be punative about it is if the other driver was DUI, in which case I'd get an automatic breach of the threshold in my state anyways (and likely yours as well.) There's also a few other non-injury circumstances, such as out-of-state vehicles, uninsured vehicles, etc. For me, I'm happy with my decision. I think sometimes the insurance industry sells coverages on fear and not need. Get your agent to work up a few cost alternatives with increased PIP/Med Pay & wage loss coverage and see what you think. I'm afraid I can't compare apples to apples cost-wise because New Jersey is its' own animal when it comes to auto insurance. In the end, like any other insurance coverage, you'll got to weigh the likelyhood of needing the coverage versus the cost to you. As far a company referrals, I'm afraid I haven't bought insurance in NJ in years (originally from Montclair!) but I recommend sticking with the big names - State Farm, Allstate, Nationwide if your concern is service. What I consider the 'upstart' companies (Geico, Progressive) tend to have the best rates out of the gate, but if you have a claim, fuggedaboutit. Your rates will double and the service after the initial call is iffy at best. Just my opinion. If your only concern is cost, find an independent agent who can run you through a few companies for estimates. Best of luck.

Q: help with auto insurance?

Q: Anybody know of any car insurance co's that will give auto insurance policies to 17 year olds??
I have a 17 yr old that has already gotten 2 tickets so I want him off my policy - as he is making it too expensive for me to afford - I told him he needs to get his own insurance. I already called my insurance and tried taking him off my policy (as I took away his driving privelages) but they told me I HAVE TO keep him on my policy even if he doesn't drive - He has a license and has to be covered under my policy because he lives with me - so I can't take him off til he gets his own insurance. My problem - most co's will not issue a policy to anyone under 18 (PS - we live in New Jersey)

A: As a licensed agent for NJ I can assure you there is no insurance company that will insure your son until he is 18. Given his driving record his rates will probably be near the 6000 per year range for just liability. He will benefit with a lower rate continuing to be on your insurance because the rating will be based on yourself with him only being an occasional driver along with his tickets. If he goes on his own he will be rated individually with no prior insurance history, 2 tickets and no credit to speak of to counter balance some of his activity if in fact is was a good credit rating. There is something called a Named not Owned policy which he can obtain is he does not have a vehicle titled in his name which would give him valuable insurance history which will lower his rate in the future when he does obtain a car of his own but he will also have to maintain a clean driving history for at least 2 years for this to be effective. I know it is tough and NJ rates are ridiculous; the only ones higher are Bronx and Brooklyn NY. But once again you will have to wait until he is 18 to even get a Named Not Owned Policy. Just to explain a Named Not Owned Policy will cover him for basic liability which would be Bodily Injury which pays out if he is in an at fault accident for the other person's medical injuries, Property Damage which would cover the other person's vehicle damage and PIP or Personal Injury Protection which would cover his medical bills up to a desired threshhold until his health coverage would then kick in with Supplimental uninsured motorist which would cover him if he was hit by someone with no insurance or not enough insurance to cover his injuries along with NJ Limited Tort or Verbal Threshhold. The limits I would suggest for a Named Not Owned POlicy would be BI 15/30, PD 25k , PIP 15k with 250.00 deductible SUM 15/30 SUM property damage 5k..... This Named not Owned policy will cover your son for any vehicle he drives which he does not own. This would be the way to get him off your policy out on his own. The other alternative would to be to have your son obtain insurance through the State. He would have to demonstrate that he has tried at least three insurance companies (when he is 18) all of which who refuse to offer him coverage.

Q: Good price on full coverage auto insurance?
I just bought an 09 ford escape XLS, with a 4 cylinder engine and lo-jack installed. I'm 27 years old and a married federal employee. Since the vehicle is financed I have to have full coverage insurance of course. I'm located in New Jersey so its a bit expensive. With $1000 deductibles, road side assistance and rental car coverage I was quoted at $113.95 a month OR $602 for 6 months from esurance... Is this a good price? I havent had to have full coverage before and want to make sure I'm getting a reasonable rate More info: My license is clean as the last time I drove in the states was 9 years ago. The other factor is that for the past 9 years I've been in europe and because of that my insurance company isnt recognized here, so its like I havent been insured then.

A: A BIT more expensive? Yikes, that's an understatement for NJ. I'm guessing, for $602 for six months, you have no liability insurance? Limited tort? ROTTEN COVERAGE. Your problem is your agent has NO clue what they are doing. "Full coverage" does NOT mean you are fully covered. In your case, if you hit a car worth more than $5,000, you'll be writing a check for the difference. I'd bet, based on your premium. Go get an agent who can explain each coverage to you, and make recommendations.
